The Cyprus Computer Society (CCS) participated once again in the established annual event of the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), the European Researchers’ Night, which took place on 26 September 2025 at the State Fair.
As part of the event’s “Live Stage” program, CCS presented: “Four CCS Robotics Competitions: Four Student Demonstrations”, featuring students who excelled in the annual robotics competitions organized by the CCS:
• Robotex
• FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL)
• Minoan RobotSports Competition (MRC)
• World Robot Olympiad (WRO)
Four demonstrations showcased the innovation, creativity, and passion of students for science, technology, and robotics:
1. FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge & World Robot Olympiad (WRO)
The team ROBOTHEADZ from STEM Education Cyprus, coached by Dr. Pericles Cheng, shared their experiences from participating in the FIRST® Championship 2025 in Houston, USA, and presented their current preparation for the National WRO Cyprus competition.
2. Robotex Girls Firefighting – Fire Extinguishing by Young Female Roboticists
The teams Angels from Archangelos Gymnasium in Lakatamia, with Computer Science teacher Maria Gioutani and under the guidance of educator Miltos Karras, presented the Robotex Girls Firefighting challenge, which is addressed exclusively to girls. They demonstrated how their robot “extinguishes” fires, while also highlighting the broader goal of the challenge: to strengthen the presence of women in STEM professions.
3. Robotex – Robotics Construction “Return to the Moon”
The team KodMastroi, brothers Georgios and Stylianos Papasolomontos from Archangelos Gymnasium, with the support of their mother and teacher Zoe Kanari, presented their robot AquaRegis. This AI-powered construction is designed to detect and extract water from the Moon, contributing to the sustainability of future lunar bases.
4. Minoan RobotSports Competition (MRC) – Drones
Students from the Technical School of Famagusta/Avgorou, guided by Computer Engineering instructors Elena Polycarpou, Evangelia Oikonomou, Andreas Kile, and Martha Christou, showcased the Drones & Drones Soccer competitions of the MRC-Global Olympiad. Students Alexandros Gavriel, Andreas Siathas, Alexandros Theodorou, Nikos Tyrimou, and Andrea Vitti piloted their educational drones live on stage, demonstrating their flying and control skills.
CCS’s participation in the European Researchers’ Night 2025 once again highlighted the talent and creativity of the Cypriot student community in robotics and STEM, encouraging the younger generation to pursue studies and careers in technology and innovation.
