The WRO (World Robotics Olympiad) Cyprus 2024 was successfully completed on Saturday, September 21, hosted at the European University Cyprus.

The competition brought together students from primary and secondary schools across Cyprus, who were challenged to assemble and program robots to tackle the demanding tasks of this year’s theme, “Earth Allies.” The young roboticists explored how robotics technology can contribute to creating a more environmentally friendly way of life, promoting the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature.

It is noted that the winning teams in each category will represent Cyprus at the corresponding global WRO competition, which will take place from November 28 to 30 in Turkey.

Specifically, in the Primary category, the first place was won by the team "Laouris Power" (Angeliki Laouri, Anastasis Georgiou, Charalambos Kolokasidis) with coach Mr. Yiannis Laouris from the Y. Laouris Informatique private institute in Paphos. In the Gymnasium School (Junior) category, the first place was secured by the team "Aradippou Gymnasium" (Agathangelos Georgiou, Giorgos Chatziloizou, and Nektarios Christoforou) from the namesake school in Larnaca, with coach Mr. Giorgos Petrou. In the Lyceum (Senior) category, the team "Robotheads" (Ioannis Ioannou, Kourken Torossian, Konstantinos Neofytou) from the STEM Education tutoring center in Nicosia, with coach Dr. Pericles Cheng, will not be able to travel to Turkey for the WRO International competition. Therefore, Cyprus will be represented by the second-place team, "Laouris 77" (Giorgos Eleftheriou, Nikolaos Mitas, Giorgos Tsimouris), coached by Mr. Yiannis Laouris from the Y. Laouris Informatique private institute in Paphos.

The WRO Cyprus competition is organized annually by the Cyprus Computer Society (CCS) in collaboration with STEM Education Hellas and the Institute of Engineering and Technology – Cyprus Section (IET Cyprus), with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth.

The CCS also organizes three additional robotics competitions during the school year (First Lego League, Robotex, and MRC), the Cyprus Olympiadin Informatics, the Bebras computational thinking competition, and the CCSC cybersecurity challenge.
