We are proud to announce the successful participation of the team from Gymnasio Aradippou in the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2024, held in Izmir, Turkey, from November 28 to 30.
The team, consisting of students Agathangelos Georgiou, Giorgos Ch. Loizou, and Nektarios Christoforou, under the guidance of their Design and Technology teacher, Mr. Georgios Petrou, represented Cyprus in the Junior High category and was awarded a Bronze Medal. The team ranked 68th overall, out of 120 teams from 90 countries.
The team’s participation was made possible thanks to the support of the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) and was a result of their victory in the national WRO Cyprus competition. This national event was organized by the Cyprus Computer Society (CCS) in collaboration with IET Cyprus and hosted at the European University Cyprus in September.
The robot designed, built, and programmed by the team successfully competed in this year’s theme, "Earth Allies – Green Cities." The students undertook the challenge of virtually transforming a city into a greener space by creating parks, assisting in the development of gardens, and utilizing renewable energy sources.
Participation in the WRO provided the students with unique experiences, opportunities to network with peers from around the world, and inspiration for further engagement with technology and robotics. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Gymnasio Aradippou has represented Cyprus at the WRO, contributing to the establishment of our country on the international map of educational robotics.
The Cyprus Computer Society continues to organize significant educational robotics competitions, such as the FIRST® LEGO® League robotics championship and the Bebras informatics competition, offering more opportunities for students to explore technology and informatics.
