FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ANNOUNCING HACK CYPRUS 2013, THE FIRST TECHNOLOGY AND STARTUP FESTIVAL IN
CYPRUS.
July 22nd, Cyprus – As part of a wider effort to spur innovation, creativity and technological
entrepreneurship in Cyprus, the Cypriot Enterprise Link is launching the first biggest technology and
startup happening in Cyprus, taking place on the 4th-8th September 2013.
Last year, Hack Cyprus established itself with the first ever hackathon to be organized on the island of
Cyprus. The event was a great success with more than 80 attendees gathering together for 30+ hours of
building, designing and prototyping their ideas. "It was truly awesome. During the presentations, the room
was absolutely packed and buzzing. I was expecting a good number of people to show up, but my
estimations were completely blown out of the water," says Alex Michael, one of the organisers.
Inspired by last year's success, the team went back to the drawing board. Hack Cyprus 2013 had to be
bigger, better and multi-disciplined. "We identified three major pain points – education, creativity and
experience – within the current ecosystem in Cyprus", says Alex, "and we designed the festival around
them".
There are three main events taking place during Hack Cyprus 2013, along with the opening and closing
parties:
Youth Day, Thursday 5th September 2013
A day dedicated to the next generation of Cypriot technologists, aged 13-19. The day will consist of a
number of workshops, tutorials and games focusing on the basics of coding, engineering and robotics.
Hackathon, Friday 6th – Saturday 7th September 2013
A two-day, open-themed hackathon, starting on Friday morning and ending on Saturday afternoon. Following
the completion of the hacking session, the teams will present their ideas and the best ones will receive
prizes.
The Insights Conference, Sunday 8th September 2013
The highlight of the festival, Insights is a full-day conference on technology and startups. A stellar lineup of
speakers from the UK, Greece, Hungary and Cyprus will analyse and present their thoughts and give advice
on topics like lean startups, design, product development, team building, fundraising and more.
The event is supported by a number of international and local organisations with a strong interest in
technology, creativity and entrepreneurship such as Yahoo! (Developer Network), Amazon Web Services
(AWS), The University of Cyprus, SOFTImpact, Cyprus Computer Society, Cocoon Creations,
PeoplePerHour, onefinestay, Datatech Cyprus, Hellas Direct and more.
