For the second consecutive year, Cyprus returns with a gold medal from the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI 2026), which was held in Italy from 12 to 18 May 2026.
A particularly outstanding achievement was recorded by secondary school student Mariza Paspalli, who won the gold medal and ranked 3rd overall among 248 participants. The participants came not only from Europe but also from other regions of the world, and were selected as the top representatives of their countries in the field of Informatics. Mariza continues her impressive progress in international Informatics Olympiads, having won a total of 11 additional medals over the past three years, confirming her strong potential for future success.
The Cypriot team also included students Anastasia Evangelou, Rafaella Nicolaou, and Chrystallena Karittevli. All competitors represented Cyprus with distinction, demonstrating a high level of knowledge and performance. The team was accompanied by Informatics teachers Father Antonis Georgiou as Team Leader and Afroditi Hadjimarkou as Deputy Team Leader.
This distinction is of particular importance to the Cyprus Computer Society (CCS), as it strengthens the ongoing effort to increase girls’ participation in Informatics and STEM fields in general. It also reaffirms Cyprus’ strong and consistent presence in international student Informatics competitions.
Following the successful hosting of the junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics (jBOI 2025), Cyprus continues to invest in young talent and will participate in the major Informatics Olympiads in 2026: the International and Balkan Olympiad in Informatics (IOI & BOI), as well as the Junior European and Balkan Olympiad in Informatics (EJOI & jBOI).
The Cyprus Computer Society warmly congratulates all members of the Cypriot delegation for their outstanding performance. It also extends its sincere appreciation to all individuals and organizations that consistently support youth development, and in particular the participation of girls in the field of Informatics.
The Cyprus Informatics Olympiad is organized annually by CCS in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth. The event is supported by XM, Oracle Academy, and ICDL.
