Expertise
What is your role, job title, and field of expertise?

I am Liza Charalambous, Co-founder and CTO of Malloc, a privacy-focused startup specializing in secure applications. My expertise lies in cybersecurity, privacy-preserving technologies, and scalable cloud infrastructure. At Malloc, I lead the development of innovative solutions that empower users to take control of their digital privacy while navigating the boundaries of what is technically possible in cloud environments. Before co-founding Malloc I was a key contributor to more than 20 EU and nationally funded projects in cybersecurity, digital forensics, cybercrime, and surveillance.
I hold a PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Cyprus, where my research focused on the Learning of Robust Classifiers with data uncertainties. I also have an MSc in Digital Signal Processing and Intelligent Systems and a BSc in IT and Multimedia Communications from Lancaster University, UK. My passion for digital security started during my time as a researcher at BAE Systems UK, where I worked on aircraft surveillance under the EPSRC framework. I have collaborated with organizations such as IBM, Europol, Interpol, and various CSIRTs and law enforcement agencies across Europe.

Inspiration
What sparked your interest in this technology field and what path led you here?

My interest in technology started at a young age, fueled by curiosity and a love for problem-solving. However, my true passion for cybersecurity emerged when I began working in the industry while also pursuing my PhD. During this time, I delved into advanced methods for fighting cybercrime and advocating for human rights, with a strong focus on protecting cyber victims and strengthening digital security. Realizing how often privacy is compromised, I was driven to co-found Malloc and create tools that empower individuals to take control of their online safety.

Career Growth
What skills and strategies have helped you succeed in this field?

Several key skills have contributed to my growth in this field. Adaptability has been crucial in an ever-evolving tech landscape, while critical thinking and problem-solving have allowed me to tackle complex security challenges.
One key skill I continuously strive to develop is the ability to approach problems with an open mind and the willingness to challenge my own assumptions. Being open to proving myself wrong and refining my approach has been invaluable, especially in cybersecurity, where evolving threats demand constant adaptation. For example, an idea might seem conceptually ideal, but in practice, the current technology may not make it feasible. In such cases, pivoting and adapting the strategy is crucial. There have been instances where an idea seemed conceptually perfect, but in practice, the current technology made it unfeasible. In such cases, I’ve learned that pivoting and adapting my strategy is essential. Rather than stubbornly pushing an impractical approach, I focus on reassessing the problem, identifying alternative solutions, and leveraging existing technologies creatively. I’ve come to realize how important it is to understand both my strengths and weaknesses. I try to share what I know with others, especially in areas where I feel confident, while also staying open to learning from those who excel in areas where I want to improve. This approach has helped me grow, not just in problem-solving, but also in adapting to new challenges with a more open and flexible mindset.

Memorable Achievements
Share a project or moment that reflects the impact of your work.

One of my proudest moments was launching Malloc's first product, a privacy-first VPN that prioritizes user security without sacrificing performance. Seeing it adopted by thousands of users, receiving feedback on how it has helped protect people’s digital lives, and continuously improving it has been incredibly rewarding. Additionally, being recognized as a female leader in a male-dominated field and inspiring other women to pursue cybersecurity has been a personal highlight.

Challenges
How do you stay ahead in a competitive field, and what obstacles have you overcome?

The cybersecurity field is highly competitive and fast-paced, requiring constant learning and adaptation. What matters most to me is continuously improving myself and striving to do better than the day before. I focus on making the most out of what is available to me, learning from every experience, and adapting to new challenges. Regardless of the result and each challenge I face, it is very important to me to be fair with everyone around me and be mindful of others. By staying resilient, constantly learning, and surrounding myself with a supportive network, I’ve been able to push past obstacles and grow both personally and professionally.

Work-Life Balance
How do you manage the demands of career and personal life?

Being a founding member of a startup means that when the time calls, I need to be available no matter what is happening in my personal life. However, before letting work completely take over, I try to make informed and conscious decisions about how I manage my time and energy. Setting boundaries, prioritizing tasks, and embracing flexibility help me navigate this balance. Passion fuels long hours, but I also make sure to take time for personal interests—like baking, which is a creative outlet for me—to maintain perspective and avoid burnout. When you truly enjoy what you do, work doesn’t feel like a chore—it becomes something fulfilling and energizing.

Personal motive
What’s your personal motto or favourite quote that can also inspire the younger generation to follow studies and a career in an ICT field?

Back when I was still an undergraduate, my motto was "Learn who you are and do it on purpose." Over the years, I refined this idea, realizing that true success and happiness come from understanding your values and deeper aspirations. I stay highly committed to my goals, always setting clear targets for myself at any given moment, but rather than chasing a singular dream, I focus on continuous growth and improvement. This mindset has shaped my approach to challenges, pushing me to focus on problem-solving rather than getting stuck on obstacles. I hope it inspires the next generation to pursue their ambitions fearlessly and with purpose.
To those considering a future in ICT, my advice is to embrace both your strengths and weaknesses. Capitalize on what you excel at, but also work towards improving where you need growth. Surround yourself with positive, supportive people who challenge and inspire you. The field of technology is constantly evolving, and those who stay open to learning and adapting will thrive.

Future
How do you envision the future of technology and what role can gender diversity and inclusion play?

Technology will help us overcome obstacles and turn ideas into reality—it is up to us to use it to our advantage. Technology is evolving at an unprecedented rate, and with it comes the need for more inclusive and diverse voices. Gender diversity brings fresh perspectives, fosters creativity, and leads to more robust, ethical solutions. I envision a future where women play an even more active role in shaping technology, particularly in cybersecurity, AI ethics, and privacy-enhancing technologies. By mentoring, advocating, and leading by example, we can create an ICT landscape where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive.
